Rhodochrosite (fluorescent)
Santa Eulalia District, Mun. de Aquiles Serdan, Chihuahua, Mexico

Sparkling, gemmy, and quite attractive, these rose-red Rhodochrosite crystals cover one side of the matrix on this fine, vertical thumbnail from the famous 1970s and 80s finds at Santa Eulalia. An old classic! The gemminess and luster create a scintillating look, but what really catches my eye is the brilliant, pinkish-orange fluorescence that emanates from the crystals. It is difficult to tell if the pink layer below (be it Manganocalcite or an earlier generation of Rhodochrosite) the gem Rhodos is fluorescing or the Rhodochrosite crystals themselves, but the effect is dazzling either way. The quality of these Rhodos is quite good, and the aesthetics are equally good. Formerly in the collection of W.S. Logan, and includes one of his superb labels.
