The exceptional orpiment specimens from the Jiepaiyu Mine in China (1990s) were long considered the best in the world and easily rival the best of those from Peru or Nevada, with their divergent clusters of bright orange, prismatic crystals like you see on this piece. This is a killer specimen with well over two dozen, gemmy, lightly striated, lustrous and huge crystals up to an astounding 5 cm in length and 1 cm across! The color is magnificent, as is the candy-like luster. There is some contacting and small damage around the periphery along the crystal edges where they were contacted and separated from other adjacent Orpiment clusters, and inside is revealed a vibrant yellow-orange color. These big, gemmy Orpiment crystals are growing around a single, translucent white, scalenohedral Calcite crystal and it is that contrast that makes this special, memorable, and one of the better examples in size range from this production of the 1990s era in China. The divergent Orpiments are growing out of a matrix of white, coarsely granular Calcite. This is a real prize for the species as a display specimen!
