At first glance, this amazing, scintillating rhodochrosite from South Africa looks like a sparkly red armadillo! This is a highly unusual style, amidst all the pockets of rhodochrosite found in the Kalahari Manganese field mines in the time around 1980, when they came out. This has since been in the famous rhodochrosite collection of Dr Bill Logan, which we purchased recently. It is a large piece in nearly pristine condition. In nice lighting, particularly LED, this sparkles like glass. This style is among the most rare of rhodochrosites, and shines out from a showcase with reflections. See those little black needle-looking areas? Hematite! A classic association from N'Chwaning, which can also be seen in a robust formation on the "inside" of the matrix.
