This is an exceptional, rare style of olmiite in that we have a relatively huge spherical cluster of crystals with stunning glassy luster and a deep color! The piece looks like a golf ball (a bit larger) and is complete all around 360 degrees. Interestingly, the shape might be due to the fact that it seems to cover a large spray of white xonotlite crystals inside. Perhaps that is why we have this unusual, expanded shape to what normally would be a much smaller cluster of crystals. Olmiite can be gorgeous depending on the lighting — some lighting shows it as red, others as orange-brown, or brown; so in sunlight it is beautiful but in a showcase it depends on your particular lighting. This is from a small stash of exquisitely chosen specimens old (early 2000s) and new (circa 2015ish), collected by Paul Balayer with official permission of mine owner Des Sacco, and held back for their private stash until sold to us. This is from the older finds and, again, is of quite massive size for a cluster of such quality. It is fully translucent in strong light.
