Epidote from Alaska, or rather from this tiny island part way between Alaska and Russia, is one of those historic American classics that seems to stand up to the test of time. They are still the best USA epidotes, in general. I have seen other small crystals, thumbnail specimens - but this one has a special character that makes it stand out dramatically. It is a perfectly balanced specimen with a 2-cm-tall epidote contrasted against sharp, gemmy quartz crystals that look like they twirl ou from the epidote like a pair of dancers, momentarily still for a photo. It is just a really dramatic specimen as a thumbnail of ANY species, epidote rarity aside. It has always stood out from the crowd, which is why it was so desired by three previous thumbnail collectors. It was long in the Tom Moore collection before being pried out by Jim Houran in trade, for his American Beauties suite that literally required this epidote and no other! That entire collection was sold, and this is the first time in several decades it has recycled to the market.
