Spessartine Garnet on Smoky Quartz
Wushan Spessartine Mine, Tongbei, Yunxiao Co., Fujian, China
Small Cabinet, 7.5 x 4.8 x 3.0 cm

This is a striking, terminated smoky quartz crystal cloaked with gemmy and lustrous, cinnamon-orange spessartine garnet crystals from the good finds at the Wushan Spessartine mine. The sparkling garnets are richly clustered about the quartz crystal, except for the termination, and range in size from 2.0 to 5.0 mm and all are incredibly well-formed. The quartz crystal is 6.8 cm in length and attached to a small piece of matrix. The glassy, transparent garnets are of two distinct sizes: an earlier, drusy generation 1-2 mm in size that almost completely jackets the smoky quartz crystal except the tip, and then a later generation of 4-5 mm, gemmy, sparkling spessartine crystals that are attractively scattered on the earlier garnets as well as the small, pseudo-triangular piece of matrix that serves as the substrate for the handsome, bejewelled smoky quartz crystal. An eye-catching piece! This is from the personal collection material of the mine owner, Chen WeiGang, which I bought in China in the early 2000s.
