Spessartine and Quartz
Wushan Mine, Tongbei, Zhangzhou Prefecture, Fujian Province, China
Cabinet, 10.7 x 9.1 x 6.5 cm
Spessartine garnet from this mine has come out in abundance in the past. However, it slowed to a trickle the last few years as a number of the mines on this mountain shut down. I have been there and seen it - it is HARD WORK! One family controlled much of the best mine's production throughout the peak period of the late 1990s through about 2007. This is from their collection, long held back in China until recently sold. It is pristine, complete all around, and just plain "sparkly" with reflecting light from the garnets! Few quartz clusters from here have so much balance and just the right amount of garnet creeping up the cluster without hiding the terminations. It is, all in all, one of the finer examples of its size range and style. Joe Budd photos.
