Shangbao Mine is famous today for certain styles of fluorite, including complex cuboctahedrons with classic stepped faces and phantoms within. However, back in the 1990s when we first saw specimens coming to the Western markets, Shangbao fluorites of the time were very different from what people see in material from the 1990s-recent years. This is the oldest style, mined in the 1980s or early 1990s. you can see these have more normal fluorite luster and shape than most Shangbao fluorites of more recent times - sharp cubes with edge bevels on most of the smaller crystals. However, as the crystals get bigger (and they approach 1 inch or 2.5 cm), you see more and more of them dominated by octahedral modifications, thus a cuboctahedron shape. The larger they get, the more pronounced. Bevelled edges are wonderful accents to the sharp, gemmy main cubic centered faces, which are like aquariums that you can look right inside to the matrix underneath. Associated with minor pyrite and quartz, this is a gorgeous old classic. It is complete all around. Better in person!
