Baryte is known from thousands of localities around the world, but the ones from Laurion can have a beauty and character all their own and they are very rare indeed, in quality. Golden-tan, lustrous, and tabular individually, it is the overall curving arrangement of the crystals that creates such a distinctive look here and to some few greek specimens recovered in 2010. Stacked in parallel (almost 'flowing') clusters, the appearance is highly aesthetic with such an 'organic' feel to it. Look at it with a different thought in mind, and you could almost envision a breaking wave. I have seen somewhat similar pieces from this historic, Bronze Age district, but none quite so large and pristine and interesting as this large small-cabinet specimen. Excellent and uncommon material collected in 2010.
