Exceptional textbook crystal for shape but beyond that, it is shocking for the species in luster and the elongated form - a razor sharp, exaggerated octahedral crystal. The location produces some of the finest Magnetite crystals in the world but this single crystal was long considered by Alex and others to be among the best out of thousands produced. It stands so far above, frankly, it is a different beast. Almost nobody, on first seeing and holding this, could guess it was magnetite. This is truly the kind of sharp, beautiful, shocking item that makes for a competition-quality thumbnail at the highest level, compared to merely representational thumbnail specimens. It is certainly the finest we have seen. Alex purchased it via Gene Schlepp from the collection of Rukin Jelks when it was sold. Rukin, known for his love of metallics in particular, had a fine thumbnail suite that had not been seen in decades.
