This is a stunning, highly important specimen featuring a rather large twinned bixbyite crystal sitting atop a few crystals of gem topaz, from the classic Utah locality for both species. Rarely seen in combination, the small topaz crystals add an accent to the giant bixbyite. At an inch (2.5 cm ) across, it is one of the biggest examples of the species in quality from this locality, as most crystals are in the 5-15 mm range. 25 mm across is simply at the top of the scale, with only a few larger crystals even known to exist. The crystal is complete all around with mostly sharp faces, and a few small areas with disrupted growth resulted in minute stepped faces (but not damage). This was from the Irv Brown collection of thumbnails and miniatures, sold a few years ago. It dates to the 1980s, and I was told it had been collected by John Holfert when he owned the claim, and purchased directly from him by Irv.
