Calcite (twinned)
Irving Materials Quarry, Anderson, Madison Co., Indiana, USA
Thumbnail, 2.7 x 2.1 x 1.8 cm
Ex. James (Jim) Houran; Allan Young; Kyle Kevorkian
SOLD

A series of limestone quarries in Ohio and Indiana have provided some very fine calcite specimens that are unique in the world for their appearance and style, particularly these famous twinned calcites from Anderson, Indiana (where i learned to field-collect as a kid, in the 1980s, by the way!). This is difficult and hard limestone to dig in, and few crystals come out with such perfection as this. We have a robust twin, with classic amber color, perched on a natural pedestal. This is a large, full, balanced thumbnail as the calcite is 2.3 cm across, perfect, 360 degrees complete all around, and gemmy. It would be hard to find a better thumbnail-sized example, given the perfection and perch on small matrix knob. This comes out now through three major thumbnail collections all focusing on crystal shape and perfection, so this comes with excellent provenance as well. This is from the notable "American Beauties" thumbnail collection built over several decades by Jim Houran, and sold to Kyle Kevorkian in its entirety some time ago.
