A fascinating, rare, old-time specimen from the W.S Vaux and Philadelphia Academy of Sciences Collections. Three fossilized Paleozoic mollusks are superbly preserved on (and being galena-ized over time) a galena cube and massive galena on this historic Wisconsin specimen, from the old lead mines of Southwestern Wisconsin, near Shullsburg. Lead mines were established in Lafayette County in the 1820s. W.S. Vaux lived from 1811-1882 and this rarity probably dates to the American Civil War era or earlier.
