Razor sharp crystals to 5 or 6 cm on edges dominate this dramatic piece, which features classic translucent and multicolored fluorites from the Illinois fluorite district. Sharp blue and purple zones surround an original growth of amber yellow core cubes. A little flower of baryte adds a welcome accent. The piece is large and imposing, and has dramatic display when backlit moderately. Fluorescence shows sharp red and white layers within, presumably due to petroleum inclusions. Despite the size, this is as pristine as you can ask for in a large old Illinois piece of this style; it had a few very very tiny dings on a few upper edges, 1-2 mm only, which have been filled at the lab so they are not visible (with UV visible epoxy, as per standard accepted practice). One of the big surprises when we unpacked the worldwide collection of Kurt Hefendehl, who was based in Germany, was a small suite of choice, finely phantomed fluorites from Illinois that he bought in the 1980s-1990s heyday of this district, that is now closed.
