This is a large, gemmy and fine example of the legendary "Red Glow" Ojuela fluorites from a small pocket that came out in maybe 2007-2008, and was sold even in Mexico for a super premium. However, this specimen never went to market. Most of it, if not all, was controlled by the New family (TopGem dealership) and Jason New kept the best lot of these in his collection (much of which I purchased in 2010 and later sold into the market - I see them still turn up, time to time). This specimen was kept for the choice Small Cabinet collection of Mexican classics, built by dealer Ruben Avila in Mexico City; and Ruben was a scout for Top Gem, so he simply never passed it on to them and it missed the market while all the others sold through Mike or Jason New at the time (around 2008-2010). It is, from what we have seen, either the best or among the best few large and transparent crystals from the discovery. Not only is it sharp, gemmy, translucent to transparent, but it has the finest and most intense red color of the fluorescence, that made the pocket famous. At the time, we were not sure what causes the unique red fluorescence in this material - and I am still not sure. But it is obvious, dramatic, and beautiful. The color under UV is a strong red color, not an orange-red or a purpley-red as fluorite often is; but a real RED red color. This remains one of the few notable and named pockets of the fluorite from Mexico, over a decade later.
