Gem heliodor from Ukraine is one of the most instantly recognizable and treasured of all gem crystals, fairly unique in the world for the impact of gem quality heliodor (yellow beryl) with mesmerizing surface details. This is an older specimen thought to have come out in the 1990s, but it could be earlier, and it is doubly terminated, complete all around. It is 100 percent gem! Most such crystals have etched terminations, with little remaining crystal face from the original formation event. However, here we can see, on each end, a more flat and angled face where much of the original termination shape was preserved, even as you start to see the amazing solution patterning effects for which these are noted. A perfect specimen in the size class, from the important beryls suite of Pala Intl. and Bill Larson. Notably for some reason most specimens are bigger — perhaps because smaller crystals dissolved away in the pockets at higher numbers. Fine specimens in this size range are uncommon — not too big and therefore pricey (as the price also reflects faceting value), nor too small to be impactful. The quality of this crystal is so high, that it could be heated to turn it to aquamarine, and cut for gemstones for that more accessible market to the public, the sad fate of so much Ukrainian heliodor over the years. 74 grams mass.
