Chalcopyrite on Calcite
Baisha Copper Mine, Daye Co., Huangshi, Hubei Province, China
Small Cabinet, 8.2 x 5.6 x 4.5 cm

This is a stunningly attractive, iridescent Chalcopyrite on Calcite from a limited find in Hubei, China a few years ago (about 2014-15)! A heavy dusting of sparkling, multi-colored iridescent, less than 0.5mm Chalcopyrite crystals cover whitish Calcite scalenohedrons in a very attractive grouping. The color of the peacock iridescence are like a kaleidoscope and range from scintillating orange to yellow to green and then red and blue! Individual Chalcopyrites that comprise the coating are so dense and tightly grouped that only the form of the Calcite is evident with only a trace of Calcite appearing locally in the display area and around the periphery of the piece. Dramatic when displayed vertically! Only a minor, barely noticeable nick on the tip of the top crystal and one on the bottom, otherwise the significant points on this piece are excellent. No more of this style have been found since, and they are definitely in the realm of "modern Chinese classics." We only have a last few pieces from the pocket, of which we purchased the majority of the top quality.
