Spodumene var. Hiddenite (FDL)
Hiddenite, Alexander Co., North Carolina, USA

A SUPERB, gemmy Hiddenite from the First Described Locality of Hiddenite, North Carolina. This large thumbnail, which weighs in at 5.1 ct, has very good luster and as pure a green color as you could possibly want, with the chromophore being chromium. The crystal, nicely terminated on one end and etched on the other, is a great thumbnail in every respect. So-called Hiddenite from Brazil and Afghanstan, often labeled as such at some dealer stands, is NOT true Hiddenite, thus it is mislabeled and over-priced. This crystal is the real deal, and exquisite. It has a stunning and sharp termination, without the usual etching or dissolution effects seen in these. This was a specimen considered among teh best in size by Terry Ledford, the former operator and owner of the mine. He sold it from his collection to Jim Houran, noted TN collector, over a decade ago.
