Sapphirine with Phlogopite and Calcite
Morafeno, Tranomaro Commune, Amboasary District, Tulear Province, Madagascar
Thumbnail, 3.0 x 2.3 x 2.3 cm
An amazing large thumbnail specimen comprising two, very well-formed, indigo blue, tabular {010} crystals of sapphirine with good luster. The exposed portion of one crystal is 1.7cm across, the other 1.8cm! The crystals are frozen in a matrix of phlogopite, quartz, and calcite. These sapphirine crystals are exceptional and this is one of the finest specimens for sharp crystals that we have seen for this rare magnesium aluminum silicate.
