Lazurite (Large Crystal)
Monte Somma, Somma-Vesuvius Complex, Naples Province, Campania, Italy
Miniature, 3.8 x 2.9 x 2.5 cm
Ex. Carl Acosta; Giancarlo Fioravanti; Roberto Palumbo
SOLD
This Italian rarity showcases a relatively large (over 3 cm) single crystal of Lazurite embedded in matrix. The Lazurite in subhedral, with some faces still present despite twisting growth (meaning it may be a compressed crystal, distorted by geology in the past). The matrix, which has yellow fluorescence, is a weathered volcanic basalt. The color is a rich blue, and the crystal is exceptionally large for Italy, and very respectable for anywhere for that matter. Acquired in 1965 by exchange from the noted Palumbo collection. Rare!
