Fluorite and Calcite
U-72-75 Rosiclare Level, Crystal/Victory Complex, Spar Mountain area, Cave-in-Rock, Illinois, USA
Small Cabinet, 8.0 x 6.0 x 3.8 cm
Ex. Ross Lillie
This piece has special significance as a rare example of good fluorite from an old section of the ore body, apparently from when few were preserved. This is a unique and quality combination in any case, but the locality detail adds value to the piece, to those who care about such things (like Ross Lillie did!) The piece has a dramatic central, sharp, very attractive purple Fluorite set amongst tan-to-brown zoned Calcites. The Fluorites are gemmy to translucent, with a medium purple core and a thin, deep purple outer zone. When backlit, they are particularly beautiful (shown in last photo). The Calcites are subhedral clusters with a dark brown (hydrocarbon?) core. RCL2303
