The finest blue-green smithsonites in the world – from Kelly mine, New Mexico; and Choix, Mexico – are highly desirable classics, gracing museum halls and private collections all over the world. In the summer of 2021, new finds of blue-green smithsonite and aurichalcite created a wave of excitement due to their stark similarities to these classic finds. This specimen, from a lot of high graded material from the few pockets recovered, is a compelling example from these new finds. From the bottom of the specimen, small botryoidal blue smithsonites with typical vitreous luster dot the surface on a thin coating of matte-luster aurichalcite. At the top left of the specimen, the smithsonite takes on a more massive, cohesive botryoidal form, creating an overall dynamic composition to this specimen.
