Calcite, Marcasite
Webb City, Webb City-Carterville-Prosperity Field, Tri-State District, Jasper Co., Missouri, USA
Small Cabinet, 9.1 x 5.9 x 5.4 cm
This is a strange old Tri-State calcite with marcasite - strange, due to the complex stepped form of the display side (much prettier in person - what you cannot see is the high luster, so that as you turn this specimen in the light these steppes reflect and flash). The crystal overall is rhombohedral, but it is as if someone carved steps into one side of it! There are micro-marcasites included INSIDE the crystal. The face look to all be cleavages - the crystal was basically cleaved out of the matrix by the miner (calcite cleaves in this perfect rhombohedral form) .
