This is a fine American ilvaite on matrix of competition quality! Jutting out of a matrix of 1 cm black ilvaite crystals and 1 cm quartz crystals, is a large, equant ilvaite, rising roughly 3cm x 3cm. This crystal has a matte luster and is extremely well formed with a broad, classic termination. While the mine has produced a fair number of these specimens in the past, this is one of the best I have seen and is certainly among the best for its size, on matrix, barring only specimens from Dalnegorsk and perhaps a few from old finds in Italy. Admittedly, ilvaite is often rather unappreciated as a species but it shouldn't be - good crystals are darned uncommon..
