WINZA-23
Sapphire/Ruby
Winza, Mpwapwa district, Dodoma region, Tanzania
Miniature, 5.5 x 3.5 x 3.0 cm

This specimen hosts a rather large, lustrous and translucent, color-zoned crystal, measuring 3.1 cm across and 2.4 cm in length. Minor contact on the left side of the crystal does not diminish the quality of the specimen, and is not immediately distracting from the front face anyhow. The other faces of this large centrally emplaced crystal are sharp and bright. There is a fair amount of gem material within, as well, though dispersed into small zones. The intense bi-coloration of this specimen leans towards the purple, to sapphire, even though the crystal habit is that of the rubies from here (sharper and more pseudo-octohedral). Thus, this is a very dramatic specimen, both for color and crystal size; as well as interesting for the form/color arrangement itself.
