THIS IS BOTH LARGE AND OF INORDINATELY FINE QUALITY FOR THE SPECIES, truly shocking for its aesthetics and symmetry. And it stumps most people at our office. What is it? It is slightly convex, lustrous, jet black, hibonite crystal from the classic locality in Madagascar. I have never seen such a lustrous big one, except an old piece in a French museum as I recall. Most old systematic collections have one or two, but they tend to be 1-2 cm, clunky dull and matte in luster and a bit fatter and less symmetric. Front and back are shown. Ex Gerald Herfurth, Paul Stahl collections.
