Originally found in a single pocket in this asbestos mine in Quebec, the miners thought they had purple prehnite and sold the lot of this purple mineral (all material of this quality) to Charlie Key. He sold the lot to the Royal Ontario, except for a few he kept for his personal Canadian collection. This is a stunning, gemmy piece in thumbnail size, a true rarity now, as those were the only sources (the ROM released some as traded deaccessions through the Tysons in the early 2000s). This is an Exceptional and rich lavender-blue lustrous and translucent 3.2 x 3.0 x 1.4 cm specimen of this uncommon hydrous calcium silicate species. Photo by Jeff Scovil. Photos of this specimen can be found in The Mineralogical Record, Arizona Mineral Collections, 2020; 51(1): 157. It is a miracle to see such fine specimens of a one-find rare species turn up, and this is truly a robust, showy thumbnail example.
