Mica Group mineral don't often command the attention and respect in a display specimen and yet this particular example, a gem phlogopite crystal, can certainly fit into a sophisticated collection of gem crystals. This is an exceptional doubly terminated crystal of gem Phlogopite that measures 3.7 cm in length and 1.6 cm across. The crystal is perched aesthetically on an off-white Calcite matrix and over half of the Phlogopite crystal sticks up out of the matrix to show off its gemminess and lovely bronze-yellow color. There is also a small cluster a few gem Phlogopites on the lower right of the piece where the largest crystal here is 1 cm in length. The gem Phlogopite crystals on this piece break the stereotype for Mica Group minerals as they are world class gem Mica crystals with a great color, transparency and luster. And if all of these qualities aren't enough the crystals fluoresce a vivid yellow in short wave UV! This is a fabulous small cabinet piece obtained by careful preparation from a very old block of unprepared matrix obtained over a decade ago from Herb Obodda (who brought it into the USA himself and specialized in this region), and not contemporary. Note a bonus - the shocking fluorescence
