This relatively new find of gibbsite is probably the world's best of species for intensity and color. This is a vibrant, variegated sky blue and pale blue small cabinet specimen that exhibits great color saturation. The surface is covered in small, densely aggregated botryoids of gibbsite with minor pale gray "fins" of matrix showing through locally. This is one of the most aesthetic pieces for its size from the summer 2014 pocket, which I saw for sale at the Shanghai show in April 2014. Gibbsite is an uncommon aluminum hydroxide and in some places, there are patches of a transparent mineral that may be colorless gibbsite, aragonite, or maybe hyalite opal that coats some spherules. A really beautiful display specimen that is accompanied by a custom engraved acrylic base.
