Saleeite
Ranger Uranium Mine, Northern Territory, Australia
Large Cabinet, 17.5 x 10.0 x 6.3 cm
Ex. Warren Somerville
SOLD
This specimen is both gorgeous and important, being one of the larger and finer saleeite clusters to come out of this mine between 6 and 4 years ago, when it started producing what are safe to say the world's best for the species. The crystals are of large size for the species, to about 1 cm, and are unusually freestanding on the contrasting quartz matrix. Interestingly, some saleeites from this locality are greenish and some are yellow, and this piece leans more towards the lemon-yellow end of the spectrum compared to most others I have seen (the earlier ones, which I had sold 4-5 years ago, were greener). Highly fluorescent, as with most radioactive species. This piece is from the prestigious collection of Dr. Warren Somerville, a noted Australian collector, part of which was sold at Tucson.
