Todorokite

Todorokite is a hydrated sodium calcium potassium manganese magnesium oxide and a member of the Crytomelane Group. It forms monoclinic, metallic, opaque, purple-gray, brown to black, reniform aggregates composed of minute lathlike crystals, flattened {010} and elongated [001]. Todorokite occurs as a secondary mineral in pegmatites, as alteration product of manganese minerals, and as an essential component of manganese nodules.

It was named in 1934, by Toyofumi Yoshimura, for its discovery locality, the Todoroki Mine, Yoichi, Shiribeshi Province, Hokkaido, Japan. Other notable localities include: Newry and Greenwood, Oxford Co., Maine, USA; Tip Top mine (Tip Top pegmatite), Fourmile, near Custer, Custer Co., SD, USA; Palermo No.1 mine, Grafton Co., New Hampshire, USA; Sterling Hill, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA; Several localities in Oriente prov., Cuba; Tachgagalt, Morocco; Smartt open pit, Kalahari Manganese Field, Northern Cape Prov., South Africa; Kalgoorlie and Pilbarra, Western Australia.

Peruvian Treasures

Between the recent Peruvian finds of saturated chrysocolla, deep green fluorite, and mirror-like pyrites, this region of the world is definitely experiencing a resurgence in interest from mineral collectors. We blended a combination crystals from newer finds and old classics (think old Peruvian rhodochrosites from the Jack Halpern collection, plus new chrysocolla specimens from Tentadora) to showcase a range of beautiful material from an assortment of Peruvian localities.
