Tourmaline With Phantom
Stak Nala, Gilgit, Pakistan
Toenail, 3.0 x 0.9 x 0.8 cm

This is a doubly terminated elbaite with minor albite, that shows clearly the multicolored character of this famous find of the late 1980s. It is the single most interesting tourmaline from this locality I have yet seen in this size range - most are bigger, so actually finding a miniature isn't easy, too! The pink end has a pyramidal termination while the green end has a flat pinacoid with minor pyramids, as with all from the find. This crystal has luster, translucence, and clearly shows color zoning. All that and a neat phantom inside, with a clear internal termination, to boot! Note the intense burst of lime green below the phanotm crystal, too - perhaps the result of some kind of dissolution effect enhancing the chemistry there while the large doubly-terminated crystal grew over the original phantom?
