Axinite is a collectible mineral of high quality from a very limited number of worldwide localities, and generally Peruvian material simply does not rank up there with Alpine (Russian and Swiss) material. However, every now and then, a few specimens standout from the crowd. This is a very large and fine, splayed cluster of large crystals of Axinite-(Fe) from the Molletambo Quarry in Peru. The clove-brown blades have very good luster and are translucent to gemmy. The largest crystal is an impressive 7.2 cm long. A minor amount of edge wear along the very sharp edges is expected, but absolutely trivial here - and not readily noticeable. For its size, this is simply the best Peruvian Axinite that I have seen personally. It is on par with Dalnegorsk material in size and sharpness, and just a bit less than Alpine material in translucence. Art Soregaroli acquired this in 1997, in Peru. Art literally wrote the book, PERU – Paradise of Minerals! We purchased his Peruvian subcollection and his worldwide collections in 2010 or so.
