In the summer of 2021, a surprising discovery of bright blue-green smithsonite and aurichalcite was found in a few pockets at Yanga Koubenza in the Republic of Congo, a locality that has been explored since the early 1900s, but never produced any specimens like these before now. This small cabinet specimen is a spectacular example and one of the finest from the lot. It is a dynamic plate of richly saturated blue-green botryoidal smithsonite with wonderful vitreous luster that has been almost completely removed from any matrix. Backlit, the specimen is translucent and glows beautifully. This specimen illustrates some of the best qualities of the find and can be easily compared to famous finds from Kelly mine, New Mexico and Choix, Mexico at a price point that is much more reasonable! A striking small cabinet that would be a wonderful addition to any smithsonite or African mineral suite! The luster on this piece is the best of all here; and color on this one is the strongest of the lot, and very saturated.
