Fluorite with Pyrite
Yaogangxian Mine, Yizhang Co., Chenzhou, Hunan, China
Small Cabinet, 7.0 x 6.0 x 5.0 cm
SOLD

Phantoms of purple Fluorite within the sharp pastel mint-green cubes highlight this gorgeous small cabinet piece from the famed Yaogangxian Mine. The colors are riveting, and more complex than a photo can convey because they occur in 3 dimensions. This is a really stunning pair of intergrown stepped-growth "pyramids" of Fluorite unlike any others we've seen for sale excepting 3 pieces, from the same pocket of 2008, that are literally considered legendary both in China and in the USA. This is the fourth, a small cabinet specimen I have known about but could never obtain until now, from the private collection of a Chinese dealer in Changsha. They really do resemble Mayan pyramids as they have very similar architecture with their distinctly stepped growth faces that descend in measured intervals down what would be each cube face. Although they look deceptively "octahedral" overall, there is no vestige of a true octahedral face anywhere on the piece. The vivid purple, squarish phantoms stand out just inside the select cube steps in the two sets, starting at the top of each. The phantoms are discontinuous which adds interest and intrigue to the piece, not to mention a lovely, marked contrast. Several small, bright metallic clusters of brassy Pyrite dot the Fluorite in places and range between 3 mm and 1.7 cm in maximum dimension and consist of 2 to 3.5 mm cubic crystals. All of these wonderful characteristics combine to produce a very appealing small cabinet piece from the Yaogangxian Mine. It is sharp and complete all around with no damage, only contacted at the bottom where it was removed from the pocket. To my eye, this is among the most unique fluorites from all the pantheon of amazing fluorites that this mine has produced, and it is beyond the typical styles. It screams of Yaogangxian style of fluorite, and yet goes beyond the norms and is different than all other styles over the 30 years I have known and loved this mine....and I mean, really loved it. I have bought at least a thousand specimens from here, dealt with the miners directly in China on dozens of trips, and paid world record prices for Yaogangxian material on several occasions. And this, it ranks up there in my mind as memorable.
