Baryte with Quartz
Xiefang Mine, Ruijin Co., Ganzhou, Jiangxi, China
Small Cabinet, 7.0 x 5.2 x 3.6 cm

While golden Barytes from China were once readily available as smaller crystals on large plates, they have become very difficult to find today; and in any case, balanced collector specimens of THIS quality were always extremely rare. This is a bright yellow, transparent to translucent, doubly-terminated crystal with chisel-point ends and amazing luster. It's actually a compound crystal made up of one, large, central crystal with several other sub-crystals in parallel growth, which is more apparent in the front and less so in the back resulting in triangular stepped growth. The top portion of the Baryte has remarkable clarity and the entire crystal has an overall very appealing yellow color. Two rafts of white Quartz are covered with glistening, stubby, white Quartz crystals complementing the piece well and providing great contrast. The association of the yellow, well-formed Baryte with bright, milky white, nubby Quartz makes for a well composed piece. Whereas most of these examples of any quality seemed to have had damage when they came out, here a trace of contacting and edge wear is barely discernible on this eye-catching piece. This was from an old find, and we just had it shipped in and cleaned up after purchasing in China. It is, quite simply, gorgeous, and one of the best of this robust style.
