GEM21-39
Opal replacing fossil tree limb
Banten, Java, Indonesia
Cabinet, 10.6 x 2.5 x 1.8 cm
SOLD

A stunning display of the rare process in which petrified wood limbs are replaced by gem opal material, not simply silica or plain old quartz - this is a shocking display specimen of specimen opalized wood. This particular specimen is display-worthy for any collector, but also scientifically important for the quality, and that it preserves the limb so faithfully. It is raw on one side, and polished on the facing side. 63 grams. Interestingly, the local name for this material is "kalimaya" which means "river of illusion." Several studies indicate the material is 5-7 million years old (a good reference is Precious Opal from Java by Sun et al, Australian Gemmologist (2009) 23, 513-528).
