Hematite and Quartz
Cavradi, Curnera Valley, Surselva Region, Grisons, Switzerland
Thumbnail, 3.0 x 2.3 x 1.6 cm
SOLD

Of Swiss hematite specimens, the classic locality of Cavradi gorge is king, with fine specimens represented in many Alpine mineral collections around the world. This specimen features lustrous, inky-black hematite accented with a sharp, water-clear, 1.9 cm quartz crystal, creating wonderful contrast and balance on this striking thumbnail. From the thumbnail collection of Martin C. Jensen (b. 1959) of Reno, Nevada, USA. He is not only a mineral collector, but an SEM specialist at the Mackay School of Mines, and has contributed multiple studies on localities in the western United States. The mineral species Jensenite is named in his honor. Per Martin, he purchased this specimen directly from a strahler in Camischolas, Switzerland in 1995.
