Rhodochrosite on Manganite
N'Chwaning Mine, Kalahari manganese Field, Northern Cape Province, South Africa
Thumbnail, 1.7 x 1.4 x 1.2 cm

This rhodochrosite is small but surprising for its beauty and balance! It is a charming, flower-like cluster of gemmy red Rhodochrosites, on Manganite, from the famous N'Chwaning Mines in their heyday circa 1980. The Rhodos are gemmy and lustrous, and can be either doubly-terminated! or singly-terminated scalenohedrons. Resting on Manganite, which creates a beautiful contrast, the radial cluster of Rhodos looks like a bouquet. Pristine and complete except only with one small crystal missing, the aesthetics of this thumbnail are excellent. Formerly in the collection of W.S. Logan.
