GEM19-35
Rhodochrosite
Sweet Home Mine, Alma, Park Co., Colorado, USA
Thumbnail, 2.5 x 1.7 x 1.5 cm

Among many "small rhodochrosites" from this project, there were very few truly world class thumbnails that came out, of which this is one. This is a beautiful, glassy and gemmy, cherry red, rhombohedral crystal of rhodochrosite. Stunning sharpness and the best color, combine to make it riveting in a case, and it stands out among other thumbnail specimens for the clarity, saturation, shape...it just leaps out of a case. There are admittedly many small crystals on matrix, or clusters, that would fit in a regulation thumbnail box - but few thumbnail sized specimens of Sweet Home rhodo exist with such sheer impact as this piece. It is probably from the Good Luck Pocket, given the color and quality (and holding it next to other examples, this seems the case).
