Galena, Sphalerite With Hydrocarbon Coating
Small Cabinet, 7.2 x 5.5 x 2.7 cm
Sub-Rosiclare Level, Denton Mine, Ozark-Mahoning, Illinois, USA
Ex. Ross Lillie

Aesthetically emplaced on limestone matrix is a cluster of "ruby jack" sphalerite crystals, to 5 mm across along with lustrous, battleship-gray galena crystals, to 7 mm across. Interestingly, there is a coating of bitumen or oil (natural hydrocarbon residue from the pocket that glommed on sometime millions of years ago!) on the crystals. Mined from the Bahama ore body. RCL 1071.
