An elegant scalenohedron of lustrous and translucent, amber colored calcite-or is it?! Look closely and you can see that the specimen exhibits two secondary calcite crystals at right angles to the main crystal - and those would be twins! Twinning is rare in Illinois calcite, and this particular habit ("butterfly twin"), even most so. Two twins in oriented growth on the same face of this large calcite are highly unusual. RCL 320
