Mawi Pegmatite, Nuristan, Laghman Province, Afghanistan

Gem pegmatites sometimes produce unusual or rare species which we do not expect, and sometimes even more rarely produce stunning examples of species we might expect in a pegmatite, but novel and beautiful form we had not seen before. When these came out, we had no idea what they were. This lustrous and translucent, lemon yellow crystal of stibiotantalite is from a special pocket found about ten years ago, and brought out by dealer Herb Obodda. This is one from his old stock, long put away. These are, to my mind, among the most surprising species finds in Afghanistan.
