Torbernite
Chalk Mountain Mine, Spruce Pine, Spruce Pine District, Mitchell Co., North Carolina, USA
Cabinet, 14.4 x 8.6 x 3.8 cm
SOLD
An extremely rare North Carolina torbernite! Torbernite (a uranium phosphate) is actually rare from anywhere in crystallized specimens. The best know are from Africa and France, and closely-related autunite is well-known from Germany and Washington (state). Occurrences in other localities are rare, and you just do not see North Carolina specimens around. These are flat, platy crystals, of a bright grass green color and a very high luster, looking like shiny sequins in person. Old material collected in the 1960s.
