A deep cherry-red, lustrous, very gemmy and glassy crystal measuring 2.5 cm (1 inch!) rises dramatically from a matrix of massive rhodochrosite and smaller crystals. The matrixy part is heavily included by discrete specks of black manganese which makes for a nice contrast. The manganese inclusions go up inside the major crystal as well, though they peter out about halfway up and never come to the surface. This makes for a "phantom" effect on that crystal and gives it a somewhat unusual appearance. The termination has an unusual basal face at its tip (which, though blunted, is a contact termination and not damage). Found in the late 1970s (1978-1979) and not of this quality since... 4 x 2 x 1.5 cm
