Quartz, Andradite
Garnet Hill, Calaveras Co., California, USA
Small Cabinet, 5.4 x 4.8 x 2.9 cm
What has happened here is that quartz has replaced the original andradite garnet crystals, retaining the sharp form of the andradites. So, what you are left with is a specimen of quartz in the form of garnet. Pseudomorphs of various sorts are not rare, of course, but in this case, the completeness of the pseudomorphing and the widely different crystal forms of quartz and garnet make this one most interesting.
