Nickelskutterudite (Var: Chloanthite)
Miniature, 4.3 x 3.0 x 2.6 cm
Schneeberg District, Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany
A very heavy specimen of solid chloanthite from a classic and important locality for the species. These are old specimens, some to the 1800s, and now rarely available. Technically this former species is now regarded as an arsenic-deficient variety of nickelskutterudite or simply as a synonym for nickelskutterudite. In any case, this is an excellent example of the nickel species, well crystallized, and a beautiful display quality miniature. The complex form of these crystals and their bright luster mark them as German apart from modern finds in Morocco. Ex. John White Collection.
