Marcasite on Chalk
Cap Blanc Nez (cape white nose), near Pas de Calais, France
Small Cabinet, 7.2 x 5.5 x 4.7 cm

This is, without a doubt, one of the most aesthetic marcasite groups I have seen from the chalk cliffs of the French North Sea. Only at low tide can these specimens be removed, and collecting good ones is supposed to be pretty difficult. This particular piece features a rosette of lustrous marcasite, jauntily perched on chalk. The cluster measures 3 cm x 3 cm across with the largest individual crystal measuring the full 3 cm across in the middle. It is almost completely pristine 360 degrees around - the back side has minor damage to a few of the smallest crystals, but this in no way affects either the value or quality of the specimen. Aesthetically, its a ballbuster.
