Corundum (Var: Ruby)
Miniature, 4.2 x 3.1 x 0.3 cm
Ampanihy District, Southwestern Region, Tulear (Toliara) Province, Madagascar

Though this thin specimen looks like a slice from a larger ruby crystal, it is not: it is a very unusual, extremely flattened example of the ruby-corundum well-known from this locality - a complete and terminated crystal. The crystal has a deep maroon color, and an epitaxial plateau on one side. An old specimen, Ex. Carlton Davis.
