The Wendell Wilson Thumbnail Collections

These rhombic crystals of Orthoclase are some of the most lustrous and gemmy that I have seen. The sharp faces are mirror-like in their luster, the edges of the main rhomb are about 1.3 cm, and the outer half of each crystal id perfectly gemmy. Shooting clear crystal on cores of white is nigh impossible – these are much better in person. Very aesthetic.

This is one of the nicer small Kunzites that I have come across. The color is a nice pink uniform throughout the crystal, the luster and gemminess are superb, and, to add interest, the crystal is twinned. An excellent aesthetic miniature. AND TOTALLY GEMMY - much more brilliant in person.

Very attractive prismatic crystal with excellent striations, very good luster, and a very unusual habit. Most Arfvedsonites form long prismatic crystals, but this crystal is clearly shortened along the C-axis, creating what appears to be a flattened rhomb (but it isn’t). Intergrown are several small crystals with the normal long habit, one of which has a broken termination (fortunately, it is completely hidden in the back). An excellent and unusual specimen for the species, and attractive in its own right.

Elegant pair of Spessartines perfectly placed on a matrix of feldspar. The deep red color is superior, and the luster so incredible that it makes every little speck of dust that settles on it glow. The pictures say it all.

Very fine single crystal of Spessartine resting on white albite matrix. The .9 cm crystal has excellent color, superb luster, and great trapezohedron crystal habit. It is just about a perfect garnet.

Superb single crystal of of Pargasite, 1.5 cm long, sitting beautifully on a matrix of white marble. The deep green color is fantastic, as it the luster and well-defined crystal form. Gram for gram, this doubly-terminated crystal is by far the best Pargasite I have ever come across for its sharpness and electric color.

Brazil has produced literally tons of rutilated quartzes. But how few good thumbnails do you see amidst the beasts of larger size?! This 1.7 cm beauty, lustrous and sharp, sits on a nest of shiny metallic rutile needles. Very aesthetic.

"The Flower". An elegant cluster of beautiful curving Pyromorphite crystals, the longest of which is 1.8 cm. As you can see, the apple-green color is highly desirable (and even grading to slightly lighter tips, which are translucent), and the luster is excellent. This is a wonderful thumbnail that would be among the best for the size range from the mine BUT ALSO has among the largest crystals from this famous find (i think around 1999-2000).

Another superb Pyrrhotite from one of the world’s great localities. This terrific specimen has two gorgeous hexagonal crystals, each over 1 cm across and thick, sitting on a matrix of black sphalerite and quartz. The brassy color and luster are unmatched, and there is even a hint of iridescence. A killer specimen.

Superbly defined rhombs of Siderite that are actually two pairs of penetration twins. The luster is excellent, and the habits and geometry are just about as perfect as you can get. The edges even grade to translucent, which adds to the aesthetic appeal. There is some minor edge wear in one spot, but it is insignificant compared to the overall quality of the piece. Certainly one of the finest Siderites that I have seen.

Beautiful pair of gemmy yellow, highly lustrous Brazilianite crystals arranged perfectly on a white albite matrix. You don’t often find Brazilianites this gemmy, nor in aesthetic pairs of slender prismatic crystals. A super thumbnail.

Very fine intergrown cluster of jet-black crystals, with the largest being the full 2.5 cm and doubly-terminated! The luster ranges from very good along the prism faces to average on the terminations. Sadly, there is a contact on the back, but this is still an excellent specimen of the species and displays superbly from the front.

Gorgeous cluster of deep orange-red tabular hexagonal crystals, the classic habit for the species. The luster varies from good to superb, and the partially gemmy crystals are arranged around a central 1.4 cm Vanadanite. A killer thumb.

Generous coating of the rare mineral Augelite, associated with deep-blue Lazulite crystals. The Augelites are gemmy, light green, and very lustrous. The classic rhombohedral crystals are uniformly about 3-4 mm on edge, creating a balanced and aesthetic overall look to the miniature. An excellent specimen for the species.

Lustrous and gemmy hexagonal Vanadanite crystals up to 1.5 cm in size. The deep orange-red color, superb luster and gemminess, and the lovely geometry of the cluster makes the aesthetics of this miniature stand ut dramatically from the crowd. Even better in person.
